This image of the developing skull of a rodent shows blue-staining spicules (trabeculae) of new, woven bone (primary spongiosa) Note: (1) osteocytes, occupying lacunae; and (2) osteoblasts, covering the surfaces of the trabeculae. The osteoblasts are often separated from the dark-blue calcified bone matrix by a thin layer of light-blue osteoid, that has not yet been calcified. Two large, multinucleated osteoclasts are associated with the second trabecula in the upper half of the image.
Stain = Mallory's Triple Stain.
