Periosteum (40x objective lens)

At higher magnification the blunt ends of the skeletal muscle fibers (Mu) can be seen to abut the periosteum (P), where the two are held together by collagen fibers produced by fibroblasts (Fi) that form the connective tissue around the muscle fibers as well as the outer layers of the periosteum. The periosteum is, in turn, anchored to the bone matrix by bundles of collagen fibers, called Sharpey's fibers (SF), that penetrate into the bone matrix.
