Dense lamellar bone (20x objective lens)

This image shows a region of dense (compact) lamellar bone within a developing bone. Note that the bone was decalcified prior to embedding and sectioning. Lamellar bone is characterized by the lamellar substructure of the bone matrix. Look for the fine, parallel lines that mark the boundaries between adjacent lamellae and the arrangement of the lacunae in parallel rows. Blood vessels are located in cylindrical channels through the bone matrix.

Stain = H&E.
