Woven bone - tendon insert (40x objective lens)

This image shows the place where a tendon (to the right) inserts into a bone (to the left). Note the boundary between the fibrocartilage, which marks the end of the tendon, and the woven bone matrix. The woven bone matrix is characterized by the presence of cells in lacunae and by the absence of any particular organizational pattern in either the fine structure of the matrix or in the arrangement of the lacunae. Note that the bone lacunae are isolated from one another and exhibit no particular pattern, whereas the lacunae of the fibrocartilage are often closely spaced and organized in parallel rows.
