This image from developing bone shows a region where lamellar bone (pink-staining, on the right) has been laid down on the surfaces of trabeculae composed of fragments of cartilage (pale purple-staining) covered by woven bone (light purple-staining). Note that the cartilage fragments are characterized by the absence of cells, whereas the woven and lamellar bone have osteocytes in lacunae. Between the trabeculae are blood vessels, containing eosinophilic erythrocytes, and cells of developing bone marrow.
