Compact lamellar bone (20x objective lens)

This is an image of a preparation of ground bone. It has been stained with India ink, which fills the spaces in the mineralized bone matrix. In the center of the image is an osteon (Haversian system), which has a centrally located Haversian canal and concentric rings of Haversian (concentric) lamellae in which are located lacunae connected by canaliculi. Portions of adjacent osteons and interstitial lamellae can also be seen.
