This image shows trabeculae of new bone composed of fragments of cartilage matrix (pale staining) covered by woven bone (dark staining). Note: (1) osteocytes, occupying lacunae; and (2) osteoblasts, covering the surfaces of the trabeculae. The osteoblasts are often separated from the calcified bone matrix (dark) by a thin layer of osteoid (pale-staining), which is bone matrix that has not yet been calcified.
Stain = Iron hematoxylin and eosin.
