This plastic section from the scalp shows a blood vessel containing erythrocytes. These biconcave discs appear in sections typically as doughnut-shaped structures with a lighter center and darker rim. However, their shape may vary considerably as a result of real distortions as the cells travel through the blood vessels or by the random nature of the plane of the section.
