Famed Tolkien Scholar to Visit OU as FOCAS* Lecturer

Tom Shippey, famed Tolkien scholar and Walter J. Ong Chair of Humanities at St. Louis University, will visit the University of Oklahoma Norman campus Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 8 and 9, as a FOCAS* Distinguished Lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, in conjunction with Joyce Coleman’s English class “J.R.R. Tolkien: The Road to Middle Earth,” Shippey will present “Middle-Earth and Narnia: 70 Years On” in the Mary Eddy and Fred Jones Auditorium, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, 555 Elm Ave. The lecture will examine the impact of the fictions of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, including the recent films made from their work.

In addition to Shippey’s presentation, he will attend an informal reception at 2 p.m. Thursday in 109 Gittinger Hall, 760 Van Vleet Oval. Both events are free and open to the public.
