New Bacteria Discovered
in Norman Waste Water

 

New technologies bring about new discoveries. It certainly paid off for Professor Ralph Tanner and the city of Norman.

Seven years ago, Tanner, professor of botany and microbiology, began looking in the waste water in the city of Norman with one of his classes and saw something new. Surprised at their findings, he contacted fellow botanists and microbiologists Toby Allen, OU; Paul Lawson and Matthew Collins, University of Reading; and Enevold Falsen, University of Goteborg. Tanner credits the teamwork of the scientists from around the world with piecing together the puzzle that would be known as cloacibacterium normanense.

A great time was had by all attending a reception honoring Karen Deslongchamp, financial operations director, as she gave up her office for her pool and patio. She thanks everyone for the great memories and the wonderful send-off. We'll miss you, Karen!

Single mothers interested in help with tuition on the Norman campus are encouraged to apply for the 2006-2007 Betty Baum and Norman Hirschfield Award. Three awards of $4,000 will be granted this year. Application deadline is July 14. For more information, click here.

Loretta Bass, associate professor of sociology, received one of eleven fellowships awarded by the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation. She will receive $25,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year to work on her project "The Assimilation of Sub-Saharan African Immigrant Children in France."

David W. McCauley, assistant professor of zoology, recently published an article on the evolution of vertebrates in the June issue of Nature as a Letter to Nature. Read more on this by clicking here.
